Fact Check: EU Does NOT Force People To Eat Toxic Grain Imported From Ukraine Quote Made Up

Did the European Union force Slovak people to eat toxic grain imported from Ukraine? No, that's not true: Despite the fact that the European Union did not intervene in the first days after the detection of harmful pesticides in Ukrainian wheat, individual member states possess the autonomy to prohibit grain imports without seeking permission from European institutions. Slovakian authorities blocked the import of grains themselves and regulations were tightened.

The European Commission temporarily halted imports of all Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflowers to Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. The video does not provide evidence that the European Union's later reaction to the grain ban means the Union wanted to force member states to use it and get infected from it.

The claims were made in a TikTok video (archived here) which was published by @marek.kurta on May 12, 2023, under the title:

The EU orders: Eat Ukrainian grain even if it is toxic

What happened? European politician Milan Uhrík, who is a member of the Slovak fascist movement claims that the European Commission banned Slovakia from banning the import of spoiled grains and told people to "shut up" and eat the harmful grain. The quote is rhetorical, but not based in a record of EC statements.

Who among you gave your children bread made from grains that cause cancer? And we're supposed to be quiet about it just because it's grain from Ukraine. Slovaks will not eat harmful grain.

These false statements are accompanied by other videos, which say that the importation of pesticide-treated grain is intentional and should be banned.
