Fact Check: The West Does NOT Occupy Ukraine As Portrayed By Slovak Social Media Star Wrong Occupier

Do Western countries occupy Ukraine and use it as a battering ram against Russia, as claimed by Slovak aspiring politician, Tomas Spacek? No, that's not true: Russia has occupied a portion of the Ukrainian territory since 2014 when it annexed Crimea. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022. Russian forces have since continued to destroy critical infrastructure, occupied parts of its territory and have also been accused of targeting the civilian population.

Western countries have given support, in the form of financial, military and humanitarian aid.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) on TikTok, where it was published by @tomas_spacek_republika on May 9, 2023, with the title "Message to Ukrainians from Georgia." It opened:

We are turning to the Ukrainian nation with an appeal. It is a very difficult, even tragic situation for the people in Ukraine, because it is practically occupied, but not from the East but from the West, which has turned Ukraine into its battering ram.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The video originated from a press conference organized by Sputnik-Georgia, a local branch of a state-controlled media, on May 8, 2023. It has since been shared on platforms like Twitter, Facebook, VK, and TikTok.

Tomas Spacek, a member of a populist, right wing party, Republika and assistant to Slovak MP, Miroslav Urban, has shared it on TikTok and later also on Facebook where, at the time of writing of this fact check, 1.3 thousand people shared the post. Tomas Spacek has gathered a following on Facebook by sharing Russian propaganda videos with Slovak subtitles. According to findings by Slovak newspaper Dennik N, Mr. Spacek had a bigger engagement on Facebook, than most Slovak politicians.
