Fact Check: Slovak President is NOT Sending State Money To George Soros President ≠ Govt

Is Slovakia's President Zuzana Čaputová placing state funds in a non-governmental organization associated with financier George Soros? No, that's not true: a contract between the government of Slovakia and the Open Society Foundation NGO is independent of the office of the President, and the OSF is no longer under the control of Soros but is registered as an independent Slovakian NGO.

The misleading information about the relationship between the Slovak president Zuzana Čaputova and George Soros appeared in a video (archived here) published on TikTok by user @milan_uhrik_republika on June 6th, with a caption (translated by Lead Stories) reading:

Friends, Čaputova's government tapped 21 million euros for the Soros Open Society Foundation for the care of Ukrainian immigrants. Look at it.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The government of the Slovak Republic has agreed to provide 21 million euros in funding to the Open Society Foundation through the Ministry of Labor to assist Ukrainians displaced by the war. The Slovak government and its ministries operate outside the direct control of the executive branch and the Presidency. The President has nothing to do with making a contract between OSF and the government. This makes the claim that money goes from Slovak president Zuzana Caputova to George Soros unsubstantiated. The claim operates with false arguments.

Moreover, the OSF is no longer under the control of George Soros since it left the international network of the Open Society Foundation member organizations in 2013 and is now an independent Slovak non-profit organization.

In the past, Zuzana Čaputová worked for the non-governmental organization Via Iuris, which received over a million euros from the Soros Foundation for the 16 years Caputova worked there. Via Iuris is an organization that strives to ensure that the public can effectively participate in the administration of public affairs. The declared aim is to create an authentic civil society, as one of the basic pillars of freedom and democracy, which are threatened by non-systemic legislative proposals, populist statements by politicians, and the disinformation campaign of conspiratorial media, and they promote systemic measures strengthening the independent activity of courts, prosecutors and the police without political influences. The fact that Zuzana Caputova worked as a lawyer for such an organization doesn't mean she was connected to George Soros.

The claim can be seen in the context of accusations made by Former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who described the process of forming the presidential government that now rules Slovakia as anti-democratic. The official government headed by Ľudovít Ódor is not considered the result of the president's proposal but Soros's choice. It is not the first time that Fico has connected Slovak politicians with Soros. A few days after the murder of the journalist Ján Kuciak and his partner Martina Kušnírová, Fico indicated that Soros was interfering in events in Slovakia through then-president Andrej Kiska.
