Fact Check: George Soros Did NOT Bring Down The Government Of Vladimir Meciar in Slovakia No Coup

Was the government of Slovak ex-Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar brought down by George Soros? No, that's not true: Vladimir Meciar, a former autocratic Prime Minister of Slovakia, did not have his government brought down. In 1998, Meciar lost power after free elections that saw a significant voter turnout of 84.2 percent. The outcome was greatly influenced by the formation of a broad coalition of opposition parties known as the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK) in July 1997.

Despite winning 27 percent of the votes in the elections, Vladimir Meciar was unable to secure a coalition to govern with. Consequently, Mikulas Dzurinda assumed the position of Prime Minister.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) on TikTok where it was published by @alexander_riabov on June 6, 2023, under the title "ČAPUTOVA'S GOVERNMENT GAVE 21 MILLION TO THE SOROS ORGANISATION BEFORE THE ELECTIONS." It stated:

George Soros himself in his books claims to have brought down one government in Slovakia. This was confirmed by Simecka senior, who claims Soros is his good friend who has helped to bring down the government back then.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The video doesn't explicitly mention Vladimir Meciar but alludes to a video featuring Milan M. Simecka, a former communist dissident turned journalist. In the video, Simecka mentions his friendship with George Soros. Although he doesn't assert that Soros brought down Meciar's government, he suggests that without Soros' support for the non-governmental sector in Slovakia, which helped promote ideas of liberal democracy and foster opposition to Meciar, Slovaks might not have been able to remove Meciar from power. The Smer - SD party shared the video on TikTok in an attempt to discredit Mr. Simecka, and it has also appeared on Youtube.
