Fact Check: EU Parliament Is NOT Dominated By Liberal Fanatics Half Seats

Is the European parliament 95 percent occupied by liberal fanatics, as Slovak far-right protagonist Marian Kotleba said during an interview? No, that's not true: the progressive and liberal fractions of the European Parliament are constituted by the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Renew Europe Group, and the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance. These groups currently hold 306 of the 705 seats in the EP, not even half, let alone 90 percent of the parliament.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) published on TikTok by @plenum.sk on May 4, 2023, under the title "Kotleba: Get out of NATO and the EU immediately! (source: TV SLOVAN)". In it, Mr. Kotleba stated:

There are 750 MEPs in the European Parliament, out of which 95 percent are total liberal fanatics.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The video on TikTok is made out of an interview with the leader of a Slovak far-right party LSNS Marian Kotleba on the TV SLOVAN Youtube channel. Marian Kotleba commented on the composition of the European Parliament in the context of questioning the ability of the European Union to reform itself.

Marian Kotleba is a former leader of now banned, far-right party Slovak Community, whose members have been known to march through the streets in uniforms resembling the ones of the WW2 Slovak Nazi era paramilitaries, Hlinka Guards.

In 2013 Kotleba won the regional elections in Banska Bystrica, and in 2016 he led his party into parliament, where it holds a couple of seats to this day.

Kotleba himself has lost his position as a member of the Slovak parliament, however, due to his 1-and-a-half-year sentence on parole in April 2022 for sympathizing with a movement aimed at suppressing fundamental rights and freedoms. The conviction marked the end of a well-known scandal of Marian Kotleba gifting charity cheques worth 1 488 euros to three families on the anniversary of the founding of the Slovak state on 14 March 2017.

The Slovak state was a clerofascist regime founded in 1939 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia by Nazi Germany following the Munich Conference in 1938. It was a Nazi puppet state led by Joyef Tiso, a cleric whose administration allowed the deportation of 70 thousand Slovak Jews to concentration camps.

According to the indictment of Mr. Kotleba, the amount of money written on cheques wasn't accidental and referred to the 14-word statement by the American racist David Lane: "We must protect the existence of our people and the future of white children." and the number 88, which refers to the eighth letter of the alphabet - H. The two eights are the two H's, referencing the Nazi salute Heil Hitler!
