Fact Check: Slovak Parliament Does NOT Want to Discriminate Slovak Farmers Nature Defense

Has the director of the Veľká Fatra National Park been trying to stop Slovak food independency by banning cattle grazing in the meadows? No, that's not true: The reason for the proposed ban is the occurrence of a rare plant, not the targeted elimination of Slovak production. The Ministry of the Environment is preparing stricter zoning for the protection of national parks where humans won't be able to interfere. The so-called no-encroachment zones will be located only on state-owned lands or on lands where the owners have agreed to this.

The claim that the state tries to destroy farmers by banning cattle breeding in one zone of the protected area appeared in a video on TikTok (archived here) by politician @miroslav_suja_republika on June 20, 2023, under the title "Drastically against the lobby of eco-terrorists" (translated from Slovak to English by Lead Stories staff). It opened (translated from Slovak to English by Lead Stories staff):

Today, the director of the Veľká Fatra National Park, Mr. Apfel, wrote a letter in which he asked the land fund not to extend the contract to farmers, or animal breeders, and not to give a contract in the zone three of protected area. This man is going to cut off all of Liptov. If you have until now had plots of land that you farmed, then starting today due to this letter you have a big problem.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

The Ministry of the Environment presented new zoning of national parks in 2022, aiming to strengthen the protection of rare biotopes.

The wave of criticism against the tightening of nature protection measures is based on the long-term ownership of Slovak forests and national parks by the Ministry of Agriculture. This meant that foresters and not conservationists had managed these forests. The main aim of foresters was to achieve economic indicators and generate profit.

Currently, the responsibility is being transferred to the Ministry of the Environment, which has made preserving biodiversity a priority.

A similar TikTok video (archived here) claiming the director of the Veľká Fatra National Park is fighting against Slovakia's food self-sufficiency was also published by @miroslav_suja_republika on June 20, 2023, under the title "Outrageous! The director of the Veľká Fatra National Park, Mr. Apfel, is trying to ban cattle grazing in the meadows" (translated from Slovak to English by Lead Stories staff):
