Fact Check: NO Proof Death Of Slovak Music Icon Vaso Patejdl Is Linked To COVID-19 Vaccine No Connection

Did famous Slovak musician Vaso Patejdl die as a result of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine? No, that's not true: He died on August 19, 2023, of pancreatic cancer. There is no evidence that previous COVID vaccinations had anything to do with the disease and no trusted media reports connect his death to such a vaccination.

A search for the phrase "Death of Vaso Patejdl is connected to vaccination," (translated into Slovak by Lead Stories staff) on August 30, 2023, using Google News' index of thousands of credible news sites did not reveal any report corroborating the claim.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) on TikTok by @tinamartina316g on August 27, 2023, under the title "Consequences of the vaccine." It opened with a clip of Vaso Patejdl, filmed during the pandemic, saying (translated into Slovak by Lead Stories staff):

I'm vaccinated, just to be sure and my whole family is vaccinated because we want to live, we want to travel, we want the children to be able to go to school.

Patejdl's words are followed by misinformation about vaccines, such as that the COVID vaccines caused a 300 percent increase in cancer incidence, linking the musician's death to the vaccines. Medical experts say there is no evidence linking COVID vaccines to cancer.

This claim originated from Michal Shark Hasek's Facebook page, where he posted the clip with Patejdl on August 23, 2023, with the following caption (translated into Slovak by Lead Stories staff): "Vaso Patejdl died a few days ago. He gave himself a vaccine to live and travel and do concerts. But he's not alive anymore. I'm putting this here as a warning because it's not over yet. Giving yourself a vaccine or any 'cure' just because you want to travel, go to school, go out for a beer, or see your friends, is sheer madness. Don't let anyone or anything blackmail you. It's your life! 🙏🏻."

Hasek is a well-known figure who has spread false information in the Czech Republic about COVID.

After releasing the first video, he made a follow-up video stating that some of his viewers were very offended by the first one but that in his opinion, the topic should still be discussed. He then posted another video, translated by Czech alternative news website Otevrisvoumysl.cz, of Ohio attorney Thomas Renz, who has often presented false information about alleged vaccine-related deaths, claiming that COVID vaccines are more dangerous than the virus.

Thomas Renz gained prominence among COVID-19 skeptics for leading federal lawsuits in the United States, challenging shutdowns, mask mandates, and the safety of vaccines. Anti-vaccine groups, conspiracy theory enthusiasts, and far-right media have embraced him, The Seattle Times reports.

Mr. Hasek later shared this video on his TikTok account. The Facebook video was also uploaded on TikTok by user @tinamartina316g.
