Fact Check: Slovak Actors Do NOT Ask Government For The Weapons Actor ≠ Warior

Have Slovak actors begged the government to give them weapons and send them to fight in Ukraine? No, that's not true: These actors are, in fact, participating in a crowdfunding campaign titled "The Gift for Ukraine," which has been organized by activists. The primary objective of this campaign is to raise enough funds for supplying military equipment to the frontline in Ukraine. The underlying motivation of these activists is to raise awareness about potential authoritarian threats just a few kilometers past the Slovak border. Their aim is to endorse the cause of Ukrainian freedom and independence.

The story appeared in a TikTok video (archived here) which was published by @gusty856 on April 8, 2023. It opened:

ACTORS ARE BEGGING FOR THE WEAPONS. Slovak people suggest the government should give weapons to actors and send them to fight on the Ukrainian front.

The non-profit organization "Dar pre-Ukrajinu" serves as the orchestrator of the collection effort, while the Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic stands as the campaign's principal partner.

Rather than seeking arms from the government, they are backing crowdfunding initiatives to gather funds from the Slovak citizens.

For example, Juraj Kemka says:

There are Russians in Ukraine who rape women and steal children. Let's give the Ukrainians a tank and prevent Russian hygenism.

Furthermore, the TikTok video shows the Ukrainian flag painted on the faces of the actors Juraj Kemka, Tomas Mastalir, and Richard Stanke who play roles in the campaign. However, as can be seen in the campaign pictures below, the actors do not actually have the flag painted on their faces:

The photo of Richard Stanke used in the TikTok video originated from a movie database portal, where there is also no Ukrainian flag on his face.

This is how Richard Stanke looked in the campaign video:

Although this fundraising for military equipment is the very first in Slovakia, some have already taken place in neighboring countries in the past. Czechia has previously orchestrated fundraising for the T-72 tank, affectionately naming it "Tomas" in honor of the first Czechoslovak president, Tomas G. Masaryk.
